Split Hazel Basketry with Flo Hamer Thurs 6th

Learn the endangered craft of split hazel basketry

There is a rich history of hazel basket making in England and in many parts of Europe. It was at one time a highly favoured technique to produce large, lightweight but strong baskets, for agriculture and for us in the home, now however it is classified as an endangered craft.

During the course you will learn some traditional techniques to produce a small split hazel basket. Over the day we will learn all about the identifying and harvesting of hazel, how to “strip” the rods; processing them into our weaving material, and learn a range of simple weaving techniques. Suitable for beginners, we will be using some hand tools, such as knives and saws. This is however, quite a physically demanding craft, so if you have any mobility issues or injuries, please enquire whether this is the right course for you.
