Appalachian Handled Broom Making

Brooms are an essential home-tending item. When using a hand crafted broom it brings beauty into the mundane. Join Raleigh to make this simple home item that you will use everyday.

In this class students will make 2 handled brooms including a smaller cobweb sweeper and full sized broom. We will cover choosing and harvesting handles, sorting material, binding, weaving and sewing your brooms in two different styles, and finishing.

Broom making  is a surprisingly physical craft that requires consistent application of tension between your feet and hands. Experience with making a hand broom before will help, but is not necessary.

All fiber, handles, and tools will be supplied but if you would like to bring your own handles you’re welcome to.

Handles: If you have a stick or 2 you are particularly fond of for the handled brooms please bring it. They need to be about 1.5 inches in diameter. One can be 1-3 feet long and the other about natural waist height. I recommend straight handles as they are more comfortable to use. If you would like a curvy handle for a decor broom that is ok too. Please ensure they are completely dry before you arrive.
